Vintage Japanese Showa Era 1932 Suzuribako Calligraphy Tansu Chest

This is a very special vintage Japanese three drawer (with lidded top section). (portable calligraphy tansu) made of solid kiri. Suzuribako were used as portable accounting chests (the forerunner of the attache case). Also known as a calligraphy chest as it housed an ink stone, brushes, ink stick, and paper.

Tray in the top lidded. (see pictures 5 & 6 - the ink stone and brush seen in pictures are included). (paulownia) was the wood of choice for lightweight chests like this one as it was one of the strongest woods in relation to its light weight. This chest still has its original deep 90 years old patina over original persimmon tannin stain. This chest shows a high degree of Japanese craftsmanship in the joinery, being made with. Hardened hinoki peg wood construction (see last picture). Written on bottom side of the chest is the date: November of 7th year of Showa (1932) , owned by Sakakura Kimono store (see picture 11). N this chest dates it to the 1920's or even earlier. All drawer handles, hinges, and latches are made of thick forged iron with a protective coat of burnt lacquer.

The lidded top section was for the storage and use of suzuri (ink stone) and brushes. The lidded top swings open to reveal the area where the ink stone was once housed. The lidded top opens by pushing the button (see picture 4) and closes securely when the lid is closed and the latch is pushed.

T he top handle is still very secure. And provides a convenient way to transport this chest. All drawers open and close smoothly. The triple hinged lidded top swing.

S open and closes easily. With exception of minor signs of past use (see enlarged pictures) t. Chest measures 8 1/4" wide by 12 1/2" deep by 10 1/2 high (21 x 31.5 x 26.5 cm). A very warm accent for your home or office.
