The nickname 62MAS comes from the first two digits of the reference number 62 and MAS comes from. "Auto[MA]tic [S]elfdater, " AKA automatic movement with date. Seiko saw a need for a professional dive watch in the 1960s and in 1965 they debuted this model. It is interesting to note that this model has the crown at three oclock, while most other Seiko divers have it positioned at four oclock. Seiko used a large crown for this model to make setting and changing the time easier, and the crown says SEIKO, which is a neat little detail. The dial on this model is also interesting, the color is a greyish-green that can look different in different lights. Very well with the watch and brings out the grey in the dial.
The dial has Seiko applied rather than printed on the dial. Which is also a nice detail.Seiko used large rectangular lume plots for maximum readability in the dark. And the applied chrome borders around the lume plots give the dial some added dimension. This model also features a quick-set date, making setting that much easier; in the 1960s, quick-set was not the standard yet. So this was quite remarkable in itself. Remember that these Seiko dive watches were meant to be used and abused, so finding one with a clean dial, a case that doesn't show much abuse. And lume that is all intact is difficult. The example we have here is overall very nice. It's perfect for someone who loves vintage dive watches. Stainless steel in good condition. Brown leather +new black waffle. The watch is pre-owned in good working condition.
