Up for sale, a 1975 H. S Anderson Mad Cat electric guitar in 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case.
With only roughly 500 instruments ever made, the ultra rare H. Anderson Mad Cat was made famous by Prince as one of his most unassuming yet frequently played guitars. Princes Mad Cat was a rebranded H. Unlike the Morris acoustic guitars produced at their factory in Nagano, the H.
Anderson instruments were purportedly handmade by only three craftsmen, one of which is. This Mad Cat features a figured bubble maple top and back with a walnut center stripe and body core constructed of Sen Ash.
The midrange content of ash and the top end detail of maple are both evident in the sound, and the original pair of single coil pickups read in the high 5k ohms range with plenty of articulation and top end character. Weighing 9lbs 9oz, this Mad Cat has been professionally setup here at Mike and Mikes Guitar Bar with low action, spot-on intonation, and 10-46 strings. The gloss-finished ambered maple neck has light ripples of flame figuring, and the C shaped profile carve measures. 822 deep at the 1st fret, tapering to. The stock fretwire is intact with ample height and well-rounded crowns, with light wear from the 1st position to the 15th fret exclusively beneath the plain strings.
The truss rod is responsive, the neck is straight, and the guitar frets easily in every register. The scale length measures 25 1/2, and the stock nut is 1 9/16 wide. On the headstock the H. Anderson Mad Cat logo is intact, following the contours of the Tele-style shape, and the stock chrome tuners turn smoothly and hold their pitch well. On the back of the headstock, the stamped date code is present, read in reverse for an October, 1975 build.
The through-body bridge has six saddles for optimal intonation, and the chrome hardware has plenty of shine with only faint patina. The thick celluloid tortoise pickguard has a distinctive leopard print, a very Prince-like aesthetic, and the bridge surround and jack plate are made of the same leopard-tort as well. The bubble maple top and back are framed by thick black binding, capping the ash body with a strip of walnut down the center.
The walnut center stripe is a bit proud of the maple sandwiching it (chalk it up to some minor shrinkage of the various tone woods in the past 45 years), but there is no separation. Cosmetically, this is one of the nicer examples of the Mad Cat to surface in years, with wear limited to some expected minor scratches and dings dispersed fairly evenly across the body. The ambered gloss finish on the neck shows only a handful of small nicks mostly clustered behind frets 1-6, and 11, but nothing substantial or distracting to the palm. The original black vinyl covered zippered hardshell case is included with a blue velvet interior and H.
Anderson name on the exterior. Setting this particular Mad Cat apart for collectors, this case is even rarer than the guitar itself and few Mad Cats surface with this original, essential accessory.
