Up for sale, a 1977 Greco Speedway GO-700 in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Made concurrently with the Ibanez Musician guitars at Japan's famed Fujigen factory, this Greco is an impressive and expertly crafted instrument.
With a neck through body design built around a core of maple and walnut plies, the body is fitted with stained ash wings for a rich and complex tone representative of the various body woods. The guitar delivers the attack and note articulation of maple, with the midrange heft of ash, translating well through the original PU-3D soapbar humbuckers. Weighing 9lbs 4oz, this Speedway has been professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, comfortable action, and solid intonation. The five-piece maple/walnut neck has a nice medium C profile that has just enough roundness to feel both substantial and fast, measuring. 840 deep at the 1st fret and. The thick slab rosewood fretboard features small oval inlays and the original jumbo frets which are virtually flawless with their full factory height and well-rounded crowns. The guitar plays well up the 24 3/4 scale, and the nut measures 1 11/16 in width, comprised of both a thin sliver of brass paired with a thicker piece of bone to ensure ideal note attack, string separation, and sustain. The headstock has a walnut veneer with original Greco logo and brass Speedway truss rod cover, as well as the original Greco Rotomatic-style chrome tuning machines. The guitar does exhibit a very clean older headstock repair, and this U-shaped repair extends below the volute and is smooth to the touch. Structurally sound and ostensibly stronger than the original joint, the guitar holds pitch at tension with ease. The body features solid ash wings that highlight the neck-through Speedway body construction. The pickups both read just over 8k ohms. The original bridge and tailpiece are both intact with only a touch of surface patina, and the guitar is fitted with a modern quartet of black speed knobs. In terms of cosmetic wear, there are only a few expected signs of light use for a guitar that just entered its fifth decade.
The top is very clean with a couple small spots of checking in the clear coat at the treble side shoulder. A couple dings and a small cluster of marks are present at the bass side lower bout edge, and the back is fairly clean exhibiting only a light array of faint shallow scratches in the clear coat. Overall, this guitar has been very well cared for, and is a great example of the innovation and high level of craftsmanship offered by Greco/Ibanez in their golden age!
