Up for sale, a 1983 Fender'62 Stratocaster vintage reissue in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Produced in the second year of Fender Japan production, this rare model was made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market as part of the "Japanese Vintage" (JV) line which only lasted from 1982-84. These extremely well-crafted instruments paralleled Fender's USA reissue production at the Fullerton factory, and as such this JV Strat features the same black bobbin single coils seen on its USA-made counterpart as well as a maple neck with birdseye figuring.
Extremely accurate to vintage spec, this Strat has a resonant alder body, thick slab rosewood fretboard, and a chiming, clear quality that translates well through the pickups. The "Fullerton" black bobbin pickups are Fender's very first reissue single coils with staggered alnico magnets. The guitar weighs only 7lbs 5oz and has been dialed in with low action and fresh 10-46 strings. The maple neck has a very vintage-correct profile shape with a relatively slender C shape at the nut and more roundness and shoulder as you travel up the fretboard, measuring. 850 deep at the 1st fret at. The profile has a smooth, faintly ambered gloss finish, and the fretboard edges are lightly rolled. The slab rosewood fretboard is a dark and tight-grained cut, and the original slender frets retain their full factory height with well rounded crowns.
There is moderate wear on frets 1-2, extending beneath the plain strings until fret 5, with virtually no wear further up the fretboard. The guitar conforms to traditional Fender specs with a 7 1/4" fretboard radius, 25 1/2" scale, and a bone nut just shy of 1 11/16 in width. On the correct'60s shape headstock, the original Kluson-style tuners have just a touch of surface patina and turn smoothly. The pencil date on the neck heel reads 6-15-83.
All of the electronics work as intended, with the USA-made Fullerton-era reissue black bobbin pickups featuring untouched solder joints and original cloth covered leads, all reading in the mid-5k ohms range. All of the original plastic parts are intact, and the chrome plated bridge base and Fender-stamped saddles are mated with a full-size trem block for optimal sustain. The original Black gloss finish contrasts nicely with the white pickguard and aged plastic parts.
Cosmetic wear includes an assortment of small scattered nicks on the body as a whole, light buckle rash just south of the belly contour, and scuffing in the pick path. Above the four-bolt neck plate, the small "Made in Japan" text has been removed. The neck profile has a very clean ambered gloss finish that highlights the birdseye figuring in the maple, and the profile shows only a couple very shallow nicks. As the photos can attest, this is a lovely example of an early JV production Strat. Exported directly from Tokyo, this JV Strat is one of the earliest Fender Japan reissues, complete with the original set of "Fullerton" Fender USA black bobbin pickups.
The original faux leather gigbag is included with bit of tagging on the case pocket and a vintage Coca Cola sticker to boot.
