This stunning and naturalistic vase was acquired several years ago for research and documentation purposes. I needed to find additional examples that clearly showed the intricate silver foil designs, in this work, delicate leaves that were applied to the foundation and finished with a clear enamel.
The vase has the characteristic quality of the underlying leaves raising the enamel layer ever so slightly. This raised enamel can be readily felt when gently running your hand over the surface of the vase. The background is finished in a high polish, dark green enamel in pristine, mint condition without any major faults such as cracks, crazing, hairlines or restoration.
This vase is marked on the base with a metallic foil decal for Tutanka , which is the export brand for Hirabayashi , a well known cloisonne enamel workshop in Japan. This technique is discussed in Chapter 6, entitled, "Imbedded Cloisonne Enamel" which explores various examples that incorporate design elements that has been added on top of the foundation.
In many cases, the raised effect serves as the focal point of the work. Refer to "Japanese Cloisonne Enamels; A Private Collector's Notes and Reference Guide, " by Gary Yoshino, pages 31 through 40. The height of this impressive vase is approximately 9.5 inches.
The width this vase is approximately 6.5 inches. Due to the fragile nature of cloisonné enamels, this item will be double boxed and packed with tremendous care.
